Neonatal Care Pay & Leave 2025 Update

From 6th April 2025, a new statutory entitlement came into effect under the Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Act 2023.

This gives eligible employees up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave if their newborn requires neonatal care within the first 28 days of birth.

The leave is in addition to existing parental entitlements and is designed to support parents during what can be an incredibly difficult and uncertain time.

So, what does this mean for you as an employer?

If an employee qualifies, you’ll be required to provide Neonatal Care Leave from day one of employment and potentially Statutory Neonatal Pay if they meet the earnings and service thresholds.

Updating contracts, leave policies and internal processes are essential to staying compliant and providing the right support.

At Ink, we’ve already been helping clients prepare for this change, ensuring policies are updated and that as an employer you are ready to respond.

Not sure if your documents are up to scratch? We’re here to help make sure you’re covered. Get in touch with our HR team at hrteam@theinkgroup.co.uk to find out more today.
